The skies in Florida are notorious for their summer deluges. They rain, thunder and sometimes hail. But this June 26 they will offer something a little less predictable golf balls.
United for Families will unveil its Chopper Dropper and Mini Golf Tournament at 10 a.m. June 26 at 76 Golf World in Stuart. Following the mini-golf tournament, a helicopter will take off into the sky above Golf World s driving range and let loose hundreds of numbered golf balls. The four closes balls to the pin will win a range of cash prizes totaling $1,000.
Balls are available from now through June 25 for a $10 donation or five balls for a $40 donation.
The event is new to United for Families and to the Martin County community.
We wanted to do something fun and light-hearted that anyone in the community could participate in, said Christina Kaiser, community relations director for United for Families. In this economy, we wanted to make sure we had an event that was easy to afford.
There already is a lot of interest in the project, Kaiser said.
Scott Sade, of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, has come forward to sponsor it, so that s an expense we don t have, she said. And Steve Sinclair, of Sinclair Engineering Company, has donated his time and helicopter to the event.
Morning DJs TK and Marianna are promoting the event on radio stations owned by Space & Treasure Coast Radio, and local attorney Philip DeBerard will feature the event as an ad on the giant digital billboard at Monterey and Kanner in Stuart.
Proceeds from the event will help support United for Families Road to Success program, which prepared teens for life outside of foster care by teaching independent living skills.
Registration for the mini golf tournament and donations for golf balls are being taken online at www.uff.us.
